An overview of SEO

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which means optimizing your content and website to rank higher in Google’s organic results. Every single day there are 3.5 billion searches on Google, and an estimated 75% of all clicks go to the results in the top 3 spots. This is why SEO is essential for growing your business – it can bring you evergreen leads and sales on autopilot for years to come. It’s truly the gift that keeps on giving!

There are many different disciplines in SEO. This includes, but is not limited to, onsite SEO, off-site SEO, technical SEO, creating quality content, link building, keyword research, optimizing for local listings, and much more. SEO is both a science and an art – highly technical and with plenty of room for creativity. By combining all of the aspects of SEO together, you can rank higher on Google and drive more traffic to your site than you know what to do with (a pretty nice problem to have!).

There is no business in the world that would not benefit from more organic traffic. SEO gives your business a reliable stream of highly qualified traffic on autopilot. You are not pushing your ads to prospective customers hoping they will see them – instead, these customers are typing their queries into Google and coming directly to you! This is why SEO is the most powerful form of marketing in the world.

It doesn’t matter if you are a new business just starting, or you run an enterprise company that is looking to dominate globally – SEO is the king. By creating high-quality content that answers queries, you will get traffic and build relationship that no other digital marketing platform can give you. Plumbers, tradesmen and women, lawyers, bars and restaurants, eCommerce businesses, service providers, real estate agents, local businesses – all can benefit from the evergreen traffic that SEO provides.

Imagine waking up every morning and checking your website data to see a consistent and steady stream of traffic. Not only that, but the traffic that you are getting is the cream of the crop – highly qualified leads who are begging for solutions to their problems (aka your company’s products and services). This is what organic traffic gives you. But getting atop the search engines (like Google) is not as easy as it used to be. Everyone knows just how valuable this traffic is, so competition is fierce.

So to actually rank on Google these days, you need to ensure your SEO strategy is nothing short of pristine. Your website needs to have trust in the eyes of the search engine, and your content needs to be of the highest quality so you gain credibility. This is referred to as E-A-T (Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness). E-A-T is the evolution of SEO and helps improve the overall user experience, increases local engagement and sales, increases visibility, and helps you keep ahead of your competition.

Link building is one of the most well-known aspects of SEO and is easily one of the most important. In essence, link building is the process of getting other websites to link to your website. Links are important because it signals to Google that you are a trustworthy website – the more links you have, the more trustworthy Google thinks you are. Think of it like a voting system – the more votes you get, the better!

Sounds simple, right? Well, the idea certainly is, but the difficult part is implementing it and actually getting other websites to link to your website. The most common way to get do-follow hyperlinks from other websites is from guest posting, which requires outreach, and sometimes payment to the linking website. It’s also crucial to make sure the links you get are do-follow links with the correct anchor text and, ideally, give you a decent amount of referral traffic. It might sound a bit complicated, but the results are 100% worth it.

Absolutely! Many small businesses and solopreneurs do their own SEO. Also, many larger enterprises have their own SEO divisions in-house. To handle SEO yourself, you need to make sure you have an understanding of the basics of SEO, and then build from there. Start with keyword research – the foundation of any SEO strategy. After that, you will want to implement title tags into your pages, and make sure that your URLs are SEO friendly.

Remember that in this day and age, content is king, so consider publishing high-quality blog posts for your website. Consistent blogging is a great way to engage with your audience, and it also sends signals to Google that you are an authority in your topic (which helps you rank better!). Be sure to monitor your results to see which posts are ranking the best, and which ones aren’t. A great way to take your blogs to the next level is to do a thorough competitor analysis so you can identify content gaps and get more ideas for great content to publish.

The cost of SEO will vary based on many factors, most important of which is the overall scope of work. If you are hiring an SEO agency to help you write a couple of blog posts, then the cost will be cheaper. If you need the SEO agency to run and grow your enterprise eCommerce business, then the cost is going to be significantly higher. Pricing models also vary agency to agency, but be careful what you pay for – cheap SEO services always do much more damage than they do good.

Most SEO agencies will charge you based on the number of keywords you are trying to rank for (known as ‘cost per keyword’). The more keyowords you want to rank for, the higher the monthly retainer. It should also be noted that SEO isn’t necessarily cheap. It is a highly technical craft that requires multiple experts, including tech specialists, copywriters, outreach experts, web designers, digital strategists, and more. But, it also should be noted that the cost of outsourcing to an SEO agency is always going to be more cost-effective than handling SEO in-house.

Why SEO is essential for business growth.

It absolutely can! In fact, one could argue the entire point of SEO is to increase your traffic, which will immediately impact your bottom line (aka – leads and sales). SEO gives you the ability to market to your target audience directly, and identify their user intent – both of which is done through keyword research. It’s also super important to focus on both long-tail keywords (which are typically higher converting) and short-tail keywords (which typically bring in more traffic).

But generating leads and sales through SEO is more than just strategizing – there are also things that need to be executed on a page by page basis. Specifically, you need to ensure that your website is optimized for conversions. To accomplish this, you need to create compelling calls to action – this includes alluring copy, clickable buttons, and an overall user experience that inspires the action you wish to happen.

We get asked this all the time – and truth be told, it’s quite challenging to answer! The short answer is ‘it depends’, but you can typically start seeing results in 4-6 months. The long answer is much, well, longer. The reason it’s hard to say is because there are so many factors to take into account. The time it takes to rank your website will depend on the competition of your industry, the seasonality of your campaign, the current rankings in the SERPs, and so much more.

Other factors are your current domain rating, your overall domain authority, the number of referring domains pointing to your website, as well the amount of fresh content you have recently been publishing. The final factor to take into consideration is your budget. Simply put, the higher your budget, the faster you will see results, and the more powerful your SEO campaign will be. If you can increase your budget, then you will be able to focus on content creation, strategizing, keyword research, tech improvements, and building backlinks simultaneously.

SEO and eCommerce websites go together like tacos and tequila. In fact, the strongest eCommerce businesses are the ones with an SEO strategy. Without an SEO strategy in place, your eCommerce business will rely on paid ads (whether Facebook or Google), which means you will have to pay for your traffic. While PPC can be a fantastic way for your eCommerce website to generate sales, it’s best to have a two-fold digital strategy.

Your eCommerce website should target your primary keywords (aka – the products that you are selling). These keywords are likely to be quite competitive, so it’s crucial that your on-page SEO is well-calibrated. It’s also essential to make sure that your product pages are interlinked with all of the other pages on your website so you can drive traffic to the pages that convert. To take your eCommerce SEO to the next level, consider blogging about topics related to your products. This will increase your traffic, while getting users to enter your funnel, where you can then direct them to your products pages.

SEO and PPC are the most common digital marketing strategies, but they have some very important distinctions you need to be aware of. PPC stands for Pay Per Click, and is typically done via Google Ads or Facebook Ads. This means that you will set up a targeted ads campaign, and you will only pay when someone clicks on your ads. PPC ads are fantastic because they are highly targeted and, as opposed to SEO, you can start bringing in traffic/leads/sales immediately.

On the other hand, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which is the process of ranking higher in Google’s organic search results. This type of traffic is incredibly powerful, because instead of advertising to your customers, your customers are coming directly to you. In our opinion, SEO has the most significant ROI (return on investment) of any digital marketing strategy because once you start ranking for your target keywords, you will get a constant flow of evergreen, highly qualified traffic to your website.

The initial goal of SEO is quite simple – to get more traffic to your website. To see the amount of traffic you are getting, you can check Google Analytics. Simply compare the traffic you are getting now vs the traffic you were getting before you started investing in SEO. You can also use Google Search Console (another free tool) to check how much organic traffic your site is getting, and what search queries are bringing you the most visitors.

Once you see that you are receiving more traffic, you can get much more granular with the data to assess the performance of your SEO campaign. You will want to look into your conversion rate and bounce rate, and you will also want to analyze how many leads and sales are coming from your optimized pages. It’s important to remember that SEO takes time – even the best SEO agency will need at least 4-6 months to start generating traffic. But once it starts coming in, it’s worth every penny you invested 🤸🏻‍♂️

Here at First Page we have spent the last 10 years experimenting with, refining, and perfecting our SEO process. We start with a thorough audit of your website to identify the most pressing issues on your site and find where the quickest wins can be had. From there, we put you through a very seamless onboarding process where we talk about setting goals – not OUR goals, but the goals of YOUR business so we can make sure that our strategies are aligned with your company’s vision.

Next up, we begin execution. What we execute will depend on your budget and the scope of work. Execution can be anything from technical SEO, content writing, link building, and more. Once our execution teams have finished, then it’s time for the most important part – to monitor the results and continue to optimize. We take an extremely granular approach to monitoring results as we know that some of the biggest wins can come after the campaign is live. This is one of the many things that separates a great SEO agency from an average SEO agency.

If you are interested in working with an SEO agency then there are some very important questions you need to ask before you sign any contract. Be sure to inquire about their past performances. Do they have case studies? Do they have experience running SEO campaigns in your industry? What sort of results have they generated from similar campaigns? It’s also important to ask them how they adapt to algorithm changes.

From there, be sure to ask them what tools their agency uses. The best agencies will have an arsenal of tools to help deliver optimal results, this includes subscriptions to AHREFs SEMRUSH, Keyword, and more. Also, be sure to ask them if they follow Google Webmaster guidelines. And finally, you MUST ask them if they make any guarantees? A truly great SEO agency will have the confidence to give you a traffic or keyword guarantee. If the agency is not willing to give you a guarantee, it’s not a great sign.

While it might be tempting to do SEO in-house, the truth is that it’s extremely difficult, increasingly expensive, and very time-consuming. To be able to run your SEO in-house you will need an entire team of experts. This includes, but is not limited to, tech developers, professional copywriters, outreach specialists, digital strategists, and more. These jobs pay high salaries, and finding the right people for your business will take time, and even then, there’s no guarantee that they will stick around.

In contrast, hiring an agency to handle your SEO can be shockingly cost-effective and save you a lot of time. SEO agencies already have all of the talent on hand; for example, at First Page Hong Kong, we have over 60 experienced digital marketing specialists in our office. So instead of you having to hire all of the positions needed (which can take months or years), we have the team already in place and can start working for you immediately. Professional SEO Agencies also typically have better quality control and a proven track record of getting things done.

Choosing the right SEO company comes down to one thing – doing a bit of homework. Start in the simplest (but most important) place – Google Reviews. It doesn’t matter how good an agency says that they are – their reviews will be a TRUE reflection of the company. Google Reviews will show you how well the agency treats their clients and how good of results they actually consistently achieve. If the agency has a stellar rating (4.8 stars or higher), you know you are working with SEO professionals who know how to care for their clients.

Aside from reviews, it’s important to remember this – when it comes to SEO, you truly get what you pay for. Sure, we understand that it’s tempting to cut costs and go with a cheaper SEO agency. Why not? They all seem to be offering the same thing, right? Well, the reality is the difference between the two is night and day. Cheap SEO agencies never deliver results. In fact, 90% of the time, cheap SEO agencies will do things that create long-term damage to your website, your SEO, and to your brand as a whole. We’ve seen it too many times – businesses who were destroyed by a cheap SEO agency whose sole goal is to churn and burn their clients. Remember that SEO is an investment and one of the most important ones that you can make – don’t cut any corners if you can avoid it.

A truly great SEO agency will start your campaign with a detailed strategy. To create this strategy, they will investigate the organic rankings, analyze your competition, identify opportunities, and most importantly, get to know your business to make sure the SEO strategy is aligned with the goals of your company. From there, you will be onboarded with your account manager – typically your sole point of contact for your campaign. Your account manager will also be the middleman between yourself and the execution teams.

From there, the execution teams will get to work. Tech specialists will check the coding of the site to make sure everything is fully functional. Outreach specialists will start building backlinks to your site to increase its authority. Keyword research will be conducted to look for any other low-hanging fruit. And the copywriting team will build out pages that will rank high on Google, as well as convert users into paying customers.
